  Save $9 million by closing a tax loophole on transportation

  We lose about $9.0 million each year, by granting a special lower tax rate for urban transportation and small vessels. The preferential rate was adopted when street cars and interurban railways were financially distressed. Those private street cars and interurbans have now been replaced with public transit. However, freight companies, taxis, limos, and messenger services, take advantage of the rate that was intended for other uses. Other states don’t distinguish urban and other transportation services; why should Washington?

  Throwing taxpayer money down a (post) hole

  I can't tell you how many times I've seen state roads and intersections with multiple signs - all on their own post. Seems like some of these could be consolidated on one pole. Does the road crew going out to put up a new sign even LOOK at the other posts in the same area? Guess it's another example that since they get paid by the hour, they'd rather put up a new one and waste more of our money.

  Have kids walk to school

  Reduce the $624 million spent on K-12 bus service by having students walk to school or have parents drop them off. Schools can organize "walking school bus" groups where kids walk to school as a group, led by an adult chaperon (parent volunteers). Check out this website: http://www.walkingschoolbus.org/

  This will also reduce childhood obesity.

  One Transit from Bellinham to Olyimpia

  My idea is toreplace Sound Transit with an agenicy that includes Whadcom, Island, Kitsap, Shominish, King, Pierce, Thurston Mason Counties and call it Puget Sound Transit Athorithy. Have the state state turn over all the park and ride lots to PSTA as the owner The counties that border could vote to join PSTA and the orca card system would roll over as well

  More Rail, Fewer Cars

  The future of our economy will depend on a planned transition from cheap fossil fuel (gasoline) to other modes of transportation or living closer to where one works. Our state can be a leader in this regard by encouraging the development of light rail systems that connect some of the larger cities. We need to stop building parking garages and widening lanes -- these are foolish investments in an unsustainable and unaffordable ...more »

  Run light rail down 99 and I-5, no more lanes and no special lanes for light rail....make it a law, that drivers cannot impede light rail during busy times!

  Stop funding the North Spokane Freeway

  Stop funding the North Spokane Freeway. It directly contradicts state VMT reduction goals, it disproportionately affects lower income neighborhoods, it promotes urban sprawl and is unnecessary because there are no significant traffic problems in Spokane.

  Eliminate School Buses

  I suggest that school districts in Washington terminate their contracts with school bus companies. These companies are privately owned and cost tax payers millions. I work in the Seattle School District and I have learned that if we terminated our contract with "Student First" we would solve our entire budget deficit and have plenty of money left over to facilitate all kinds of new programs for students.   I suggest that school districts in Washington terminate their contracts with school bus companies. These companies are privately owned and cost tax payers millions. I work in the Seattle School District and I have learned that if we terminated our contract with "Student First" we would solve our entire budget deficit and have plenty of money left over to facilitate all kinds of new programs for students. The students have already been assigned to schools in their own neighborhood and should all (except for students with special needs) be able to get to school by walking or getting a ride with an adult. Of course, we would still need the special needs buses, but this would be only a fraction of the current high bus costs.
