  Hire part time/on call employees for institutions to save money by decreasing overtime.

  Hire part time/on call staff for institutions to save money in overtime. At places like DOC prisons, DSHS institutions, Wester/Easter, and SCC staff get overtime, a lot at some places. From what I understand, SCC staff, RRC positions get overtime a lot, making sometimes double their yearly salary. The on call/part time positions were laid off/fired, which only created more opportunity for overtime. By hiring part ...more »

  Hire part time/on call staff for institutions to save money in overtime. At places like DOC prisons, DSHS institutions, Wester/Easter, and SCC staff get overtime, a lot at some places. From what I understand, SCC staff, RRC positions get overtime a lot, making sometimes double their yearly salary. The on call/part time positions were laid off/fired, which only created more opportunity for overtime. By hiring part time/on call staff the State will save money in overtime, and obviously people need to work-even if they dont' get benefits. On Call don't get benefits, but the work, training also opens them up for full time positions once they open, WIN WIN.

  Discontinue paying staff for travel time before they get to work.

  Stop paying employees for travel time before they are even at work. Example, Often Managers, staff, Clincal travel to a destination, such as SCC and get paid to sit on a ferry. The staff check into their office in the morning, travel to the ferry while getting paid. They should be housed at the site, and/or they don't get paid until they are at the work site and doing the work. Other SCC employees dont get paid to ...more »

They should be housed at the site, and/or they don't get paid until they are at the work site and doing the work. Other SCC employees dont get paid to sit on the ferry, and the DOC employees dont, why should a senior clinincal team and managers get paid to sit?

  Close down extra buildings rented by State

  Close down extra buildings within state goverment-DSHS, DOC, etc. For example. DSHS and other State agency rents multiple buildings across the state for offices, etc-an example is in Steilacoom there is a large building, called the white house, that has only a few employees of SCC managment and houses the Superintendent of SCC, and other managers as well as holds meetings, etc. The Special Commitment Center, SCC, has ...more »

  Close down extra buildings within state goverment-DSHS, DOC, etc. For example. DSHS and other State agency rents multiple buildings across the state for offices, etc-an example is in Steilacoom there is a large building, called the white house, that has only a few employees of SCC managment and houses the Superintendent of SCC, and other managers as well as holds meetings, etc. The Special Commitment Center, SCC, has more than enough office space for all the employees to be at the actual building/site, where they should be in the first place. I would guess it would be more effecient if the superintendent was at the location he/she is supervising. The money that would save would be hundreds of thousands of dollars, depending on closures-millions. The rent of white house for SCC also would increase productivity-the SCC managers and senior clinical have meetings, which means they get paid to travel on the ferry to get to the meeting, the staff get paid to travel to the SCC on McNeil as well. This would save money in wages wasted in travel. This is just one building I have been told about, but in Kitsap there are a few, and King County has buildings that can be consolidated.

  Reduce DSHS costs/waste

  Reduce unnecessary spending in the DSHS department. As a social worker in a community mental health setting that is private non-profit I see an outsiders perspective of how I, and my colleges, do much of the same work that social workers/staff at DSHS do, but we do it with less waste and more effectiveness. The DSHS department seems to have become lackadaisical in it approach to cost effectively offer services. It ...more »

  Reduce unnecessary spending in the DSHS department. As a social worker in a community mental health setting that is private non-profit I see an outsiders perspective of how I, and my colleges, do much of the same work that social workers/staff at DSHS do, but we do it with less waste and more effectiveness. The DSHS department seems to have become lackadaisical in it approach to cost effectively offer services. It seems to me that creating a more efficient DSHS will save money, time, resources, and create a culture that DSHS clients will see and begin to emulate and when that happens the cost will decrease further because clients will become more self reliant and capable and thus rely less on the Government. It looks like a win win to me.

  DSHS Supervisors

  Examine the need for each supervisor at DSHS. This agency has too many upper and middle managers who perform little or no public service
